About Luis Borda, M.D., Mohs Surgeon

Dr. Luis J. Borda is a board-certified dermatologist, fellowship-trained dermatopathologist, and fellowship-trained Mohs surgeon specializing in the diagnosis and surgical treatment of skin cancer.

Originally from Chimbote, Peru; Dr. Borda came to the United States to pursue his passion for dermatology, research, and academic medicine. Before beginning his clinical training, he spent four years at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine as a dermatology research fellow, where much of his work focused on wound healing. During this time, he developed a strong foundation in clinical research and an appreciation for the complex biology of skin repair and regeneration. This experience helped shape his academic interests and his eventual career in dermatologic surgery and skin cancer care.

Dr. Borda completed his dermatology residency at Eastern Virginia Medical School, where he served as Chief Resident. Driven by a particular interest in histology and skin cancer, he then pursued two additional years of subspecialty training at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, completing a fellowship in dermatopathology followed by a fellowship in Micrographic Surgery and Dermatologic Oncology (Mohs Surgery).

His clinical interests include Mohs micrographic surgery, the management of high-risk and complex skin cancers, and surgical reconstruction following skin cancer removal. His dual fellowship training in dermatopathology and Mohs surgery provides him with a unique perspective that combines microscopic diagnosis with the surgical management of skin cancer.

Dr. Borda also has a strong interest in research and medical education. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications, with research spanning wound healing, skin cancer, dermatopathology, and disparities in dermatologic care. He enjoys teaching and mentoring medical students, dermatology residents and remains committed to contributing to the advancement of cutaneous oncology and dermatologic surgery.

Outside of dermatology, Dr. Borda enjoys staying active through running, Orangetheory Fitness, soccer, weight training, hiking, and snowboarding. He also enjoys traveling, spending time with family and friends, and exploring Williamsburg and the surrounding Hampton Roads community.
