Dandruff is one of the most common scalp conditions we treat at Pariser Dermatology Specialists. While it is not contagious or dangerous, persistent flaking, itching, and scalp irritation can be frustrating and embarrassing. The good news is that dandruff is usually very treatable with the right diagnosis and care.
What Is Dandruff?
Dandruff is a common condition that causes white or yellow flakes of skin to shed from the scalp, often accompanied by itching. It develops when scalp skin cells shed faster than normal and mix with natural oils.
Dandruff is closely related to seborrheic dermatitis, a more severe form that can also affect the eyebrows, ears, sides of the nose, and chest, often causing redness and greasy scales.
What Causes Dandruff?
Several factors can contribute to dandruff, including:
- An overgrowth of the naturally occurring yeast Malassezia
- Seborrheic dermatitis (oily, inflamed skin)
- Dry scalp
- Infrequent shampooing, allowing oils and dead skin to build up
- Skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis
- Sensitivity to certain hair care products
Stress, cold weather, and hormonal changes may also make dandruff worse.
Is Dandruff Contagious?
No. Dandruff cannot be spread from person to person through brushes, hats, pillows, or close contact. It develops because of your skin’s response to naturally occurring scalp oils and yeast.
How Is Dandruff Treated?
Many cases improve with regular use of an over-the-counter medicated shampoo. Look for products containing ingredients such as:
- Zinc pyrithione
- Selenium sulfide
- Ketoconazole
- Salicylic acid
- Coal tar
For best results, leave the shampoo on your scalp for several minutes before rinsing and use it consistently as directed.
When Should You See a Dermatologist?
Schedule an appointment if:
- Dandruff does not improve after several weeks of medicated shampoo
- Your scalp becomes red, swollen, painful, or develops sores
- Flaking spreads to your face, ears, or chest
- Itching interferes with your daily life or sleep
- You are unsure whether you have dandruff, psoriasis, eczema, or another scalp condition
Our board-certified dermatologists can accurately diagnose the cause of your symptoms and prescribe stronger shampoos or topical medications when needed.
