Pregnancy is a remarkable journey that brings about many changes—both emotionally and physically. While you’re busy preparing for your little one, your skin is also going through transformations of its own. At Pariser Dermatology, we’re here to help you understand what’s normal, what might need attention, and how to best care for your skin during this exciting time.
Common Skin Changes During Pregnancy
Hormonal shifts during pregnancy can affect your skin in various ways. While some women experience that coveted “pregnancy glow,” others may deal with less welcome changes. Here are some common skin concerns:
-
Hyperpigmentation
Increased melanin production can cause darkening of certain areas—most commonly the face (known as melasma or “the mask of pregnancy”), nipples, and the linea nigra (a dark line that can appear on your abdomen).
Tip: Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 daily, even if it’s cloudy outside. This can help prevent melasma from worsening.
-
Stretch Marks
As your belly grows, you may notice reddish or purplish streaks forming, especially on the abdomen, breasts, thighs, or hips. These marks are due to the stretching of skin and hormonal changes.
Tip: Keeping your skin well-moisturized may help improve elasticity, but unfortunately, there’s no guaranteed way to prevent stretch marks. After delivery, they often fade to a lighter, silvery color.
-
Acne Flare-Ups
Hormonal fluctuations can trigger breakouts, even if you’ve never had acne before.
Tip: Many over-the-counter treatments are not pregnancy-safe, including retinoids and salicylic acid in high concentrations. Stick to gentle cleansers and moisturizers, and always check with your dermatologist before using acne medications during pregnancy.
-
Itchy Skin
As your skin stretches, you may experience dryness and itching. In some cases, more severe itchiness could signal a condition like PUPPP (pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy) or cholestasis, which requires medical attention.
Tip: Use fragrance-free moisturizers and take lukewarm showers to soothe irritation. If itching becomes intense or persistent, contact your doctor.
-
Spider Veins and Varicose Veins
Increased blood flow and pressure on your veins can lead to spider veins (tiny red vessels) or larger varicose veins, especially in the legs.
Tip: Regular movement, elevating your legs, and wearing compression stockings can help manage these changes.
Safe Skincare During Pregnancy
Pregnancy is a time to simplify your skincare routine. Focus on hydration, sun protection, and gentle cleansing. Here are a few ingredients to avoid:
- Retinoids (found in anti-aging and acne treatments)
- High-dose salicylic acid
- Hydroquinone
- Certain essential oils
Instead, look for pregnancy-safe ingredients like:
- Azelaic acid (for acne and pigmentation)
- Vitamin C (for brightening and antioxidant protection)
- Hyaluronic acid (for hydration)
- Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide (for sun protection)
When to See a Dermatologist
While many skin changes are normal during pregnancy, it’s a good idea to check in with a board-certified dermatologist if:
- You’re unsure about which products are safe.
- You experience unusual rashes, intense itching, or new growths.
- You want guidance on treating melasma or post-pregnancy stretch marks.
