Kiss Thin Lips Goodbye with Lip Fillers

Not crazy about the size of your lips? You’re not alone. Lip fillers have become one of the most popular cosmetic treatments requested at dermatology centers. Thanks to this quick and relatively painless procedure, you can easily enhance the size of your lips in time for your next vacation, big event or special holiday.

According to the FDA, lip fillers can last up to 1 year, although Lauren Barnes, MD, dermatologist at Pariser Dermatology, says she recommends getting them every 6-12 months for the best result.

“The natural enzyme in our body that breaks down lip filler is activated in part by muscle movement. The lips are the most dynamic part of our face, so the filler may not last as long there.”

Three Common Lip Filler Requests

At Pariser Dermatology, the most common lip filler requests our doctors receive are fuller lips, more youthful looking lips and getting rid of unwanted fine lines on the lips.

Thanks to the rise in popularity of more voluptuous lips in the media, patients have plenty of examples to choose from when it comes to their desired lip size. Whether you’re looking for a subtle, slightly larger pout, or to significantly increase your lip size, our team will advise you on the best way to proceed.

“Oftentimes our patients will bring in pictures of themselves from their late teens and early 20s, hoping to achieve the same youthful look of their lips. Over time, we lose the plump part of the lip where we apply lipstick. We’re happy to recommend a plan of action to get this desired look back for our patients” said Dr. Barnes.

If vertical lip lines, commonly due to puckering or pursing the lips, are a concern, Pariser dermatologists can also help. We’re able to eliminate unwanted lines and an older appearance to the lips by injecting the lips with Botox.

How Long do Results Last with Lip Fillers?

One of the best parts about getting lip filler is the quick results. Generally, patients will see the full effect within two weeks of treatment. This means improving your lip size before your wedding, family photos or even an upcoming date night is easy.

After the procedure, it will be important to avoid supplements that thin the blood, including ginseng, ginkgo biloba and fish oil, or high doses of Vitamin E oil. Additionally, alcohol also has a strong effect on thinning the blood the day of treatment and a few days after – so it’s important to avoid drinking immediately before and after the treatment.

To help dissipate occasional bruising of the lips, Dr. Barnes administers an oral supplement or topical gel with Arnica (an herb used to treat bruising, inflammation and pain). The lips will swell after the procedure, but swelling goes down within 5 days or so. The amount of swelling a patient experiences varies person to person and is based on the amount of filler product actually placed. The most significant swelling occurs the day after the treatment.
